Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Technologies

Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Technologies are two of the most important technologies in humanities quest for energy efficiency and sustainability.

Carbon Dioxide technologies can be summarized by CO2 capture and sequestration. Recent developments in the fields include the capture and storage of CO2 by various adsorbents and absorbents as well as separation from rich CO2 fluid mixtures. The main issue with CO2 capture at the moment is the ability to post combustion capturing due to higher costs of pre combustion capturing, which is more efficient and economical. Materials for CO2 capture and storage have increased in the last decade, covering activated carbons, polymeric adsorbents, Metal Organic Frameworks, Solid amines and others. Our contribution to the field has been significant via a numerous of research projects for commercial applications. Most of our work has been carried out via computational chemistry approaches, identifying and building optimum adsorbents for CO2. Our work has also contributed to novel separation membranes, mostly for rich CO2 mixtures.

Hydrogen technologies include a number of sub technologies:

- Hydrogen production from renewable sources

- Hydrogen storage and transportation

- Hydrogen use as energy source in fuel cells [hydrogen is an energy carrier]

Our contribution to the fields is very significant:

- we have carried out successfully the prediction of hydrogen storage materials

- we have investigated hydrogen storage technologies

- we have investigated conversion of renewable power to electricity

- we have been training academics, professionals, and engineers in hydrogen related technologies since 2010
