Pheromones detection by Ionic Liquids: A computational chemistry investigation

Ionic Liquis are novel materials that although are 'salts', they tend to be liquid in medium to low temperatures. They are often called liquid salts for this reason. Ionic liquids have been used for almost a decade now in applications that require their unique properties. Some of these applications involve the absorption of compounds with a subsequent change in the ILs properties that can be detected in a following stage. Such properties can be physical [weight, structure], optical [polarizability], electrical [conductivity] and others. Ionic liquids demonstrate huge advantages for such detection applications due to their eco- friendly nature.

Work was carried out in HyperChem, HyperCube and allowed for evaluation of various Ionic Liquids for the detection of pheromones. Work included the development of more than 100 ionic liquids combinations [Cations X Anions] and their screening vs pheromones indicators.
