ISO9001 and OHSAS18001 combined implementation

Among the numerous QHSE systems that we have designed up to date, some stand out. One of these cases was for KGK Ltd, which is a metal layering/ abrasion organization located in North Greece. KGK has international clients, among them NATO. Their main tasks are to maintain and protect metal surfaces that are used for fuels or hazardous chemicals storage tanks.

The organization undertakes numerous projects internationally, and thus they were in need of a QHSE combined system that would assure:

-         Their compliance with local and international legislation

-         Their compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations

-         Their compliance with third party requirements

-         Minimization of environmental effects due to organization’s activities

-         Minimization of occupational health and safety incidents due to organization’s activities

-         Continuous improvement of delivered services and products

-         Increasing client satisfaction

-         Increasing cash flows with lower failure risks

The above requirements led them to the decision of simultaneously installing an OHSAS18001 and ISO9001 systems, followed by ISO14001 in the next year. Our work was demanding since we had to research regulations and legislation, apply good practices and set working rules for:

-         Handling, transporting and storing of dangerous chemicals including toxic, flammable, explosive and corrosive agents

-         Handling, maintaining and storing power tools and other machinery

-         Setting up, manning and continuous training of emergency response teams

-         Planning and designing training needs

-         Designing workspaces and optimizing workers efficiency

Different training programs were established for the organization, among them the most important being:

-         Emergency response

-         Legislation and regulations

-         Statistics of Environmental, Health and Safety Incidents

-         Introduction to mechanical and electrical risks

-         Flammable and explosive agents: handling, storing and transportation

The organization is currently using the updated OHSAS18001/ ISO14001/ ISO9001 systems for a complete QHSA management under our guidance. Multiple sites across Europe are active and the QHSA management is applied to all of them.
